GRADUATING SENIORS EVENT
The Bologna Society hosted its second annual alumni
initiation for all graduating seniors. The event, hosted by its
founder Greg Hopeman was held shortly before graduation in May.
The purpose of the event was to welcome our undergraduate brothers into
the lifetime of being a Kappa Sigma alumni. We had dinner and
beverages along with some great conversation and games of pool.
The new alumni were greeted by many of our alumni business leaders,
lawyers, judges, and doctors.
BOLOGNA SOCIETY DUES
To avoid the need to conduct a large capital campaign
again in the future, current housing corporation President Rob Suozzi
started the Bologna Society fund. In its first year, we had income
of around $5400. The second year, we doubled our income and had
over $11,000. This past year and it its third year, we again
doubled our contributions by raising $20,000 for required capital
improvements of the house. This continued capital improvement
program is essential to the house to avoid taking out additional loans.
It was not only the income that increase, our membership
has also increased from 38 our first year to nearly 100 members this
past year.

UPCOMING CAPITAL NEEDS
While we have accomplished many things over the past
four years, there are many capital needs that still need to be done.
Our furnace and air conditioning units have not completely been replaced
in around 20 years, much past the life expectancy of use in the
fraternity house. The hot-water heater will have to be replaced
with a similar size unit—unfortunately, the venting that was installed
will also have to be redone as the code requirements have changed since
we put in the hot-water heater over 30 years ago. There are a
number of other cosmetic needs such as new carpet, tile on the front
steps, new screen for the 3rd floor, and the list goes on.
Eventually, we would also like to have an industrial kitchen reinstalled
in order to prepare or heat meals in the house.
NEW EPSILON MU HOUSING CORPORATION OFFICER
The Board has selected Luke Bomer to be the new
treasurer of the housing corporation. Brother Bomer just back from
his honeymoon will assume responsibilities effective September 1, 2007.
He will be taking over the responsibilities from Chris Armstrong who has
served as the Treasurer for the past two years—we appreciate all the
hard work Brother Armstrong has done the last two years.

SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM COMPLETED
To complete the requirements for our certificate of
occupancy, the housing corporation had to get a central smoke detection
system installed, one that would alert the entire house should there be
smoke detected. The cost was roughly $12,000 and was paid for
without any loans, thanks to the continued contributions of brothers
through the Bologna Society.
CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY
After a very long road, we have finally obtained our
certificate of occupancy. This was a journey that began in the
fall of 1997. The Fire Marshall required an escape to the third
floor and at the time, a nice chain ladder sufficed. However, it
was not very safe and the following fall, permanent stairs were
required. We completed the stairs by taking out a loan. The
third floor was then certified for meetings but the remainder of the
house lacked its certificate of occupancy, allowing brothers to live in
the house. As we made progress towards the requirements, the fire
marshal allowed residents to continue to live in the house. With
the large renovation completed four years ago, we had the sprinkler
system installed. This was followed by the central smoke detection
system and a number of other safety precautions required by the city.
Thanks largely to our former Alumni Advisor and Housing Corporation
Vice-President Ted Sherwood, all the work and many meetings with the
city have finally paid off.
